In the administrative unit of Sarande municipality, 23 thousand electors have been registered. The chief of the center, Xhemal Hasani, told ATA that "the quake was recorded at 02.58 a.m. on Sunday and had its epicenter in the zone of Konispol, 35 km from Saranda. According to this source, the earthquake was felt more in the southeastern zone of Saranda, affecting the zones of Livadhja, Xarra, Finiq, etc., without causing material damage. About a year ago, an earthquake of 4.5 points on the Richter scale, was registered, but without material damage. The seismological center of Saranda set up in 1978. "Those people are not heros fighting for freedom, they just destroyed everything they found in their way." In fact, although I can understand the rage of the betrayed people, who had lost all their savings in fraudulent, collapsed pyramide schemes and who accused the government of being responsible, nothing justifies the destruction of public, cultural goods. The library of the Southern Albanian town of Saranda, the pearl of the Ionian Sea, was situated at a corner in the centre of the town. Now it has been a ruin for three years. The buiding stared at me with blackened window openings. There was nothing behind except stones and rubbish. All books were gone or burnt. This burnt and then abandoned house stands for the events of 1997. They are a landmark in the history of the country. Several times I was told: "They had opened a business" or " there had been foreign investments - but then came 1997 and its wave of destruction." During that spring, many people turned their back forever to the small contry on the Balkans. Yet there are encouraging signs that show that the cultural life of Saranda is on the way back. My host, the poet Agim Mato, lives with his family in a very poor, even primitive appartment: he sold his house in order to buy a typesetting machine. Now he runs the only publishing house of Saranda. The books he prints range from poetry to the history of the local football team. And there are Shkelqim Hajno, Arben Vogli and their staff of enthusiastic volunteers, the pioneers of Radio Saranda. This local radio station has been broadcasting since March 1st a programme of astonishing quality under more than modest conditions. Last not least there is Auron Tare or Ani, whom I failed to meet during this holiday, the director of the Butrint Foundation, whose efforts in the restauration of the arcaeological UNESCO World Heritage site are exemplary. Te dielen u ktheva prape ne Gjermani ... dhe pikerisht ate te dielen, nje dite pasi u largova nga qyteti im i enderruar, pati nje termet ne afersi te Sarandes, ne nivelin 4 te shkalles Richter! Sidoqofte ia kalova shume bukur. Nga Tirana ne Sarande shkova me kryetarin e PS-se ne Sarande, Fatmir Mucaj. Fjeta ne shtepine e Agim dhe Yllka Matos - faleminderit per rekomandimin! E kane shitur shtepine e vjeter per te blere nje shtypshkronje te tipit Heidelberger Druckmaschinen (une kam studiuar ne Heidelberg). Krenaria e madhe, me te drejten. Bejne gjera te bukura. Per fat te keq poezite e mia nuk i kisha marre me vete ne diskete, vetem ne leter. Kalova dy dite te tera ne Sarande. U shetita neper qytet pare te dy anet e dhimbshme te Sarandes: bukurine e bregdetit qe te vret, dhe lagjet popullore, lagjen e Kodres ... kjo te dhemb gjithashtu sepse edhe njerezit qe jetojne larg detit meritojne nje jete te denje. Rastesisht u takova edhe me ish-kryetarin e Bashkise, Capajev Zera (PD), edhe me kryetarin e tanishem, Agim Shehu (PS). Me Fatmirin shkova tek Syri i Kalter dhe ne Butrint dhe hengra peshk ne Ksamil - me gishtat, patjeter. Koha qe e mrekullueshme. Diten tjeter, kur doja te beja plazh, ra shiu. Nje nga 65 ditet e vitit kur bie shi ne Sarande. Sipas rekomandimit tend, u njoftova me Thoma Niken. Pime nje kafe. Ai me duket mjaft i mbyllur, por s'pata mundesine per ta njohur me mire. U takova edhe me Shkelqim Hajnon nga Radio Saranda, ku dola ne emisionin "Studio e hapur". Mbeta shume e impresionuar. Mbreme hengra peshk perseri, kesaj here tek Agimi. U habita se sa njerez ne Saranda paskan lexuar librin tim! Duket se Skender Muco nga Qendra e Kultures Gjermane (qe po pret, nuk di cfare po pret, ndoshta qe une te jap mesime te gjermanishtes?) ka bere reklame te mire. Ne Sarande jam shume me e njohur se ne Tirane, dhe me vjen keq qe ne librin e dyte kam shkruar aq pak per kete qytet ... Do te kthehem, do te kthehem patjeter, Zoti di kur. Sidoqofte, vendosa te kaloj te dy vitet e ardhshem ende ne Gjermani, te dy vitet qe parashikohen qe t'i kaloj duke punuar per ushtrine gjermane. Pastaj do ta pres pranveren per t'u vendosur perfundimisht (ishalla...) ne Shqiperi, por perpara duhet te stabilizohet gjendja ime shendetesore, keshtu thone edhe mjeket. Si po ecin punet me ate revisten tende per Saranden?
