NAAC to Honor U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker
Entrepreneurs and Philanthropists Ekrem Bardha and Peter Kole to receive
NAAC’s “Lifetime Achievement” Awards
Washington, DC, May 13, 2004: The National Albanian American Council
(NAAC) issued the following press release regarding its June 18 Annual
Awards Dinner where the organization will honor former Secretary of
State James A. Baker.  The Albanian version of this release is included

The National Albanian American Council (NAAC) will honor United States
former Secretary of State James A. Baker and Albanian entrepreneurs and
philanthropists Ekrem Bardha and Peter Kole at the organization’s Eighth
Annual Awards Dinner in New York City on June 18, 2004.
 
Mr. Baker, who is the first U.S. secretary of state to ever visit
Albania, will receive the “Hands of Hope” Award in recognition of his
historic role in supporting Albania’s efforts to embrace a multi-party
political system and start a democracy building process in the former
communist country. 
 
NAAC’s Eighth Annual Awards Dinner will take place on the 13th
anniversary of Secretary Baker’s 1991 visit to Albania. Remembered as
one of the most important events in the history of modern Albania, Mr.
Baker’s visit followed the Commission on Security and Cooperation in
Europe (CSCE) meeting of Berlin that granted CSCE membership to the
Republic of Albania. 
 
On June 22, 1991, hundreds of thousands of Albanians from all over the
country spontaneously rallied at Tirana’s main square waiving American
and Albanian flags to welcome Secretary Baker and express their
appreciation for the U.S. and the American people as Albania was taking
its first steps out of a 50-year self imposed isolation from the West. 
 
Secretary Baker’s visit marked the beginning of a strong alliance and
prosperous relationship between the two countries. Most recently as a
U.S. partner in the war against terrorism Albania has committed a
tangible number of troops both in Afghanistan and Iraq and has been
instrumental in dissolving terrorist cells in the Balkans. 
 
Back in 1991 Secretary Baker’s historic statement that: “Albania is no
longer alone!” prompted long, enthusiastic cheers of joy in Tirana’s
main square. His statement that the U.S. would stand by the land of the
eagles was a message of hope for impoverished Albanians emerging from
decades of brutal communist rule wishing for democratic change. 
 
Mr. Bardha and Mr. Kole will receive NAAC’s “Lifetime Achievement”
Award. 
 
Mr. Bardha, a NAAC founding member and publisher of the only
Albanian-American newspaper Illyria, will be recognized for his
unwavering devotion to the advancement of the Albanian people. He is one
of the very first Albanian-Americans to invest in Albania after the fall
of communism. Among other projects, Mr. Bardha has recently opened the
Bardha Bookstore in Tirana, the most modern venture of its kind in
Albania.
 
President and CEO of Cleveland, OH based Paramount Stamping and Welding
and longtime New England Albanian Relief Organization (NEARO) member Mr.
Kole, will be recognized for his leadership in ensuring the shipment by
NEARO of 300,000 English-books to the Pogradec Public Library in
Southern Albania, establishing one of the largest English-language book
repositories in Eastern and Central Europe. In addition, Mr. Kole has
established scholarship funds for Albanian and American students
enrolled at Clark University in Worcester, MA, Idaho State University
and Miami University in Oxford, OH. About 30 students benefit from these
scholarship funds each year.
 
Recently, Mr. Bardha and Mr. Kole have been named Honorary Councils of
the Republic of Albania to Michigan and Ohio, respectively, in
recognition of their work on behalf of the Albanian people.
 
NAAC's Annual Awards Dinner honors individuals who have made significant
contributions to the betterment of the Albanians people. Prior
recipients and keynote speakers include President Bill Clinton,
Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, Senators Bob Dole, Mitch
McConnell and Charles Schumer, Assistant Secretary of State James P.
Rubin, Albanian entrepreneur and philanthropist Anthony Athanas, etc.

KKSHA-ja nderon Sekretarin e Shtetit të SHBA-së James Baker
 
Ndërmarrësit dhe filantropistët Ekrem Bardha dhe Peter Kole marrin
çmimin “Arritjet e Jetës”
Washington, D.C., 13 maj, 2004: Këshilli Kombëtar Shqiptaro Amerikan
(KKSHA) lëshoi këtë deklaratë për shtyp në lidhje me Darkën Vjetore të
Dhënies së Çmimeve që do të mbahet më 18 qershor, 2004 në The Plaza
Hotel, New York City. 
Këshilli Kombëtar Shqiptaro-Amerikan (KKSHA) do të nderojë Sekretarin e
Shtetit Amerikan James Baker dhe ndërmarrësit dhe filanthropistët
shqiptarë Ekrem Bardha dhe Peter Kole në Darkën e Tetë Vjetore të
Çmimeve që do të mbahet më 18 qershor 2004 në Plaza Hotel New York.
Z. Baker, Sekretari i parë i shtetit Amerikan që vizitoi Shqipërinë, do
të nderohet me çmimin “Duart e Shpresës” për rolin e tij historik në
mbështetje të përpjekjeve të Shqipërisë për të krijuar një sistem
politik shumë-partiak dhe për të filluar proceset demokratike. 
Darka e KKShA-së do të mbahet në prag të 13 vjetorit të vizitës së
Sekretarit Baker në Shqipëri më 22 qershor 1991.  Kjo vizitë ende
kujtohet si një prej ngjarjeve më të rëndësishme në historinë moderne të
Shqipërisë.  Vizita zyrtare e z. Baker në Shqipëri vijoi fill pas
takimit të Komisionit të Sigurisë dhe Bashkpunimit të Europës (KSBE-së)
në Berlin ku Shqipërisë iu dha dhe anëtarësia në KSBE.
Gati trembëdhjet vite më parë, më 22 qershor 1991, me qindra mijëra
shqiptarë u mblodhën spontanisht në qendër të Tiranës duke valëvitur
flamuj shqiptarë dhe amerikanë për të kremtuar vizitën e Sekretarit
Baker dhe për t’u shprehur mirënjohje SHBA-ve dhe popullit amerikan.
Shqipëria sapo kishte dalë nga një vetë-izolim 50 vjeçar.
Vizita e Sekretarit Baker shënoi fillimin e një aleance të shkëlqyer dhe
të begatë mes Shqipërisë dhe Amerikës.  Këto marrëdhënie kanë evoluar në
një aleancë të fortë që dëshmohet qartë nga kontributi i Shqipërisë në
luftën kundër terrorizmit nëpërmjet dërgimit të trupave ushtarake në
Afganistan dhe Irak si dhe bashkëpunimit për zhdukjen e qelizave
terroriste në Ballkan.
Në vitin 1991, Sekretari Baker dha këtë deklaratë para turmës entuziaste
në sheshin kryesor të Tiranës: “Shqipëria nuk do të jetë më vetëm”!
Premtimi i tij se ShBA-ja do t’i qëndrojë pranë vendit të shqipeve ishte
një mesazh plot shpresë për popullin shqiptar, i cili po dilte nga
dekadat e regjimit brutal komunist i etur për ndryshime demokratike.  
Z. Bardha dhe z. Kole do të nderohen me çmimin “Arritjet e Jetës”.
Z. Bardha, një anëtar themelues i KKSHA-së dhe botuesi i gazetës së
vetme shqiptaro amerikane Illyria, do të vlerësohet për përkushtimin e
tij në përparimin e popullit shqiptar.  Ai është ndër
shqiptaro-amerikanët e parë që ka investuar në Shqipëri fill pas rënies
së komunizmit.  Ndër të tjera, z. Bardha kohët e fundit ka hapur edhe
Librarinë Bardha në Tiranë, një prej projekteve më moderne të këtij
lloji në Shqipëri.
President dhe Zyrtar Kryesor Ekzekutiv i kompanisë “Paramount Stampim
dhe Saldim” në Cleveland, OH si dhe një anëtar kryesor i Organizatës
Ndima Humanitare të Anglisë së Re për Shqiptarët (New England Albanian
Releif Organization), z. Kole do të vlerësohet për rolin e tij në
dërgimin nga NEARO të 300 mijë librave në anglisht në Bibliotekën
Publike të Pogradecit, duke krijuar kështu një ndër qendrat më të mëdha
me libra në gjuhën angleze në Europën Qendrore dhe Juglindore.  Z. Kole
ka ngritur dhe një fond me bursa për studentë shqiptarë dhe amerikanë në
Universitetin Clark në Worcester, MA, në Universitetin e Shtetit të
Idaho dhe në Universitetin e Miamit në Oxford, OH.  Rreth 30 studentë në
vit përfitojnë nga fondi në fjalë.
Kohët e fundit z. Bardha dhe z. Kole janë emëruar Konsullë Nderi të
Republikës së Shqipërisë në shtetet e Michiganit dhe Ohios,
përkatësisht, në mirënjohje të punës së tyre në dobi të popullit
shqiptar.
Darka Vjetore e Dhënies së Çmimeve mbahet çdo qershor për të nderuar
individët që kanë dhënë kontribut domethënës për përmirësimin e popullit
shqiptar. Të tjerë që kanë marrë këtë çmim dhe folës kryesorë përfshijnë
Presidentin Bill Clinton, Sekretaren e Shtetit Madaleine K. Albright,
Senatorët Bob Dole, Mitch McConnell dhe Charles Schumer, Asistentin e
Sekretarit të Shtetit James P. Rubin, etj.  
Këshilli Kombëtar Shqiptaro Amerikan (KKSHA) është një organizatë jo
përfituese dhe jo qeveritare e dedikuar ndaj advokimit të çështjeve
shqiptare, promovimit të paqes dhe zhvillimit ekonomik në Ballkan për të
forcuar politikat demokratike, për të  inkurajuar respektin për të
drejtat e njeriut, dhe duke mbajtur programe zhvillimi dhe edukative.
