PARLIAMENT PASSES LAW ON ESTABLISHMENT OF STATE UNIVERSITY IN TETOVO

Skopje, January 21 (MIA) - The Macedonian Parliament passed Wednesday the
law for establishment of a state university in Tetovo with 68 votes "for".
VMRO-DPMNE and Liberal Party deputies left the session during the vote.

"VMRO-DPMNE deputy group tried to point out the damage from passing such a
law. VMRO-DPMNE will not take part in the voting process. We do not want to
carry the historic burden, because the biggest responsibility lies on the
ones that will vote 'for'. History will tell who is right", VMRO-DPMNE
deputy Zarko Karadzoski stated.

Slobodan Danevski from the Liberal Party said that they were not ready to
vote on the law, because, according to him, it was very weak in the
normative part.

Prior to this, Minister of Education and Science Azis Polozani did not
accept any of the law amendments.

The opposition deputies asked for an explanation from Polozani about the
contradictory issues that appear in the financing of education. On one
hand, there is an increase of prices in student dormitories, but on the
other the Ministry is being renovated, along with the purchase of the
building of ZIK "Kumanovo" for Euro 750,000, thus creating segregation of
secondary education.

As stated in the legal text, one of the basic reasons for passing of this
Law is the need for creation of normative-legal framework for a larger
access in higher education of the community members, especially the
Albanian one.

This university will be comprised of Faculty of Mathematical Sciences,
Faculty of Humanist Sciences and Arts, Faculty of Economy, Law Faculty and
Center of Polytechnic Studies, as well as a higher expert school.

The means for financing of the University will be provided from the Budget
and other sources determined by law.

The 51st Parliament session will continue after a break, and its agenda
contains the draft-laws on citizenship, industrial property and elementary
education. The deputies should also review the draft-declaration on
Macedonia's request for EU membership, as well as the draft-declaration for
support of the Holy Synod of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
