List: NYC-L[NYC-L] Questions for Albanian teenagers in Americakhagen at honorscollege.cuny.edu khagen at honorscollege.cuny.eduThu May 8 14:53:11 EDT 2003
Hello, I am a Queens college student working on a paper for a sociology class called The Peopling of New York City. Two of my best friends from highschool are Albanians so I chose to research how Albanian teenagers adjust to America and what of each culture they choose to keep or not keep. I myself have lived in more than one culture and have had to make choices between them. The questions I have been asking my friends are the following: Why did you come to America? How old were you when you came? What suprised you most about the culture? What do you like the least/the best? Do you encounter culture struggles or miscommunications? Where and with whom? At school? At home? With Americans/with Albanians? How do you define an Albanian? How do you define an American? How do you define an Albanian-American? Who are you according to the above descriptions? If you have become Albanian-american, what of the Albanian culture have you given up/what have you kept? What of the American culture have you taken? If you were to go back to Albania, what cultural struggles would you expect to encounter? Do you encounter racism at all? If so, where and from whom? If there are any Albanian teenagers in New York City who wish to respond to my questions, I'll be grateful. I need the answers by May 15th because the last day I can hand in my paper is May 22. Note whether I can use your name or not.Thank you very much. Sincerely, Kaisa Hagen
