Part-time Job Opportunity for Graduate Students Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, a project aimed to produce a critical anthology of contemporary Muslim short stories from the Balkans in English translation is in progress. Two stories will be included from each of the following countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia&Montenegro, and Turkey. Other relevant countries, especially Romania and Croatia, will be considered as well, should there be appropriate material for such an anthology. Suggestions to that effect are welcome The project intends to promote, through English translation, stories that may be otherwise inaccessible outside their authors' places of origin. It also creates an opportunity to bring together literary authors who share many spiritual, ritual, and cultural sensibilities, but differ in other ways of self-identification. Finally, the project aims to draw attention to the unity and diversity of Balkan Islam, and the regional and religio-cultural links among Balkan Muslims at this crucial period in their history. The project is envisioned as a collaborative work with graduate students whose duty will involve assisting the project coordinator in finding the appropriate material, selecting two most suitable stories, and translating them into English. All student participants will be financially compensated based on Canadian rates for part-time student employment. With the team only partly formed, graduate students with the following qualifications are still invited to apply: 1) Full- or part-time graduate status ( M.A. or Ph.D.) at any established university in the areas of Humanities and Social Sciences; 2) Native or near native knowledge of any of the following languages: Albanian, Greek, Macedonian, and Romanian* (*depending on the availability of material as noted above); 3) Excellent command of English; 4) Interest in the subject matter. Graduate students interested to participate in this project should send their names and CVs--by fax, mail or email--to the project coordinator by 30 May 30 2003 at the following address: Prof. Amila Buturovic Division of Humanities York University 4700 Keele St Toronto, ON M3J 1P3 Canada fax 416-736-5460 email: amilab at yorku.ca ****************************************************************** From eb246 at columbia.edu Fri May 2 02:12:34 2003 From: eb246 at columbia.edu (Erkanda Bujari) Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 02:12:34 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [NYC-L] hiring for Kosova Message-ID: Base Support Positions - Worldwide DynCorp has recurring overseas requirements for base support personnel for various programs worldwide. Two of my best friends from highschool are Albanians so I chose to research how Albanian teenagers adjust to America and what of each culture they choose to keep or not keep. I myself have lived in more than one culture and have had to make choices between them. The questions I have been asking my friends are the following: Why did you come to America? How old were you when you came? What suprised you most about the culture? What do you like the least/the best? Do you encounter culture struggles or miscommunications? Where and with whom? At school? At home? With Americans/with Albanians? How do you define an Albanian? How do you define an American? How do you define an Albanian-American? Who are you according to the above descriptions? If you have become Albanian-american, what of the Albanian culture have you given up/what have you kept? What of the American culture have you taken? If you were to go back to Albania, what cultural struggles would you expect to encounter? Do you encounter racism at all? If so, where and from whom? If there are any Albanian teenagers in New York City who wish to respond to my questions, I'll be grateful. I need the answers by May 15th because the last day I can hand in my paper is May 22. Note whether I can use your name or not.Thank you very much. If you are not in the area on Wed., then please pass it on to others (information included below). The Albanian-American Community needs to show its support for Kosova's Independence. Now, it's not the right time to side with a certain organization, but it's time to raise your voice and prove to U.S. Officials our solidity as Albanians... Thank you for your attention.
