4) American Council of Learned Societies Has Funding

Available for East European Language Training

Deadline: January 15, 2004

The American Council of Learned Societies

(  <http://www.acls.org/> http://www.acls.org/ ) is accepting applications
from individuals and institutions for East European Language Training
programs.

Individuals may apply for a grant of up to $2,500 for a

summer course of study in Albanian, Bosnian-Croatian-

Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian,
Macedonian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, or Slovene. Applicants may request
support for beginning, intermediate, or advanced language study at
institutions of higher education in the U.S., or, in exceptional cases, for
courses at the advanced level in Eastern Europe. Applicants must be citizens
or permanent residents of the U.S. and have completed, at a minimum, a
four-year college degree. Applications should state the name of the
institution the applicant wishes to attend, along with a statement of the
significance of this training for his/her career plans. The awards are
intended for people who will use East European languages in academic
research or teaching. Approximately twelve grants will be available.

In addition, grants of up to $10,000 will be available to

U.S. institutions to support intensive summer 2005 course instruction in
Albanian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Bulgarian, Czech, Estonian, Hungarian,
Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, or Slovene.
