O'Bryant" <obryant at MIT.EDU> To: ctcmembers at phoenix.edc.org Hi everyone, The following article on college scholarships for African-American, Hispanic, and Asian-American students from low- and middle-income families appeared in the Boston Sunday Globe on February 27, 2000. Note that the deadline for postmarking applications is March 15. Please spread the word. "Despite noble aims and a good outreach effort, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program has been clumsy in getting the word out to lower- and middle-income minority students who often live outside the information-age loop. "The program, created through a $1 billion gift from Microsoft founder Bill Gates, will award $50 million in college scholarships a year to minority students for 20 years. But with the March 15 deadline for applications approaching, some say not enough students hae been reached. "While 17,000 applications ahve been downloaded from the program's Web site, most of them in California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Washington state, only 250 completed applications had been received as of Feb. 14, said Adalberto Andino, executive director of the program. "Andino said that he is pleased with the number of applications received, and that he expects more as the deadline approaches. "Among the problems in reaching students, he said, are: ---A technological divide that keeps low-income students from finding information about the scholarships online and that prevents them from downloading applications easily. ---A lack of paper copies of the applications in poor neighborhoods. ---Spotty distribution of the applications at schools, colleges, and universities nationwide. ---The 25 national area offices of the United Negro College fund are disseminating information on the scholarships, which are also being supported by the American Indian College Fund and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. The scholarships also are open to Asian-American students. "Applicants must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, and must have significant financial need, and must be studying mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library sciences. "Andino coordinates the nationwide program from an office in Fairfax, Va., and concedes that there are difficulties. "It's a tremendous challenge when you're trying to reach out to an entire nation with one program," Andino said. "Johnson said the need for a more extensive outreach should be one of the key lessons the Gates program takes from this initial effort. "Applications may be reproduced and downloaded from the Gates Millenium Scholars program Web site at www.gmsp.org. The program can be reached at 1-877-690-GMSP (4677). The applications must be postmarked by March 15." _____________________________________________"... success is measured by the number of peoplethat are successful as a result your success!"Richard L.
