**** Kosova Action Network Discussion List **** *****************************ACTION ALERT**************************** Alice Mead-- Coordinator-Kosova Action Network Alooscnon at aol.com 207-767-7289 Portland, Maine USA Alternative contact- Teresa Crawford Teresa at advocacynet.org 315-471-7790 Syracuse, New York USA Take immediate action-released March 28, 1999 The Kosova Action Network issues this Action Alert to protest the coverage of the escalation of the Kosova crisis in the mass media this past week and provide contact names for alternative media contacts. Programming to date has been grossly one-sided. Although there is no first hand video or reports coming out of Kosova the story of the victims has to receive adequate air time. The list following this alert is of experts in a variety of fields who in many cases have first hand knowledge of the situation in Kosova, past and present. We are asking you to make this list available to as many media outlets as possible. Local television, radio and newspaper outlets are constantly in search of people to talk with about current news. CALL THEM WRITE THEM EMAIL THEM FAX THEM this list. Urge them to contact these people for comments on the crisis. Contact them yourselves if you need help writing letters or getting information. The focus of this crisis is what Milosevic's troops are doing on the ground. So far the greatest part of media focus, especially in the US, has been on political angles and the swaying of public opinion in re: President Clinton. The point of view of the Serb government has been adequately covered. WE HAVE YET TO SEE ONE SINGLE ALBANIAN LEADER! Nor for all the talk on Serbian orthodoxy has there been one attempt to include Albanian Orthodox or Muslim points of view. Instead, the preference has been to focus on vastly over-reporting possible fractures in the NATO alliance and Serb demonstrations in Greece. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of people are suffering and dying. The background of the past ten years of apartheid-like brutality that the Albanians have been subjected to is missing. This information has never appeared on American TV. How can the public possibly understand what is happening now? This is a partial list of people and resources to utilize. All can provide an extensive background regarding Kosova, its problems and possible solutions. These are responsible persons who care about the truth. Feel free to add your own contacts to this list. Please send us any suggestions. For further information on these contacts email the Kosova Action Network, alooscnon at aol.com or teresa at advocacynet.org. 1.
