This has meant that I get to see many emails about organizing going on around the world. People have been sending me interesting notes about work they are doing or questions they need help answering. On Saturday, June 26th I will go to Skopje, Macedonia and hopefully on to Prishtina. Obviously this is not a vacation at the same time it is not purely work. I have a very personal connection to the region and the crisis. But the work I am going to do is partially spurred by emails many of you have sent me. Whether it was from Sani in San Francisco telling me about a Roma group in Skopje or Jan telling me about her and Fran's trip and some of the people they met and initiatives they supported or Dan sharing with me about people he met in Skopje. As the refugee crisis has heightened I am getting emails from and about local grassroots initiatives in Macedonia and Albania that need to be publicized and need to be funded. I have forwarded these far and wide but am hampered by the distance from the actual work they are doing. Now that many refugees are returning home the face of the crisis is changing again and many of these local groups will restart inside Kosova. I am especially interested in and heartened by the response of women and women's groups to the crisis. So using my information technology project, the Advocacy Project, <www.advocacynet.org> and connections I have made in the last year I am going to investigate and profile the work and needs of these grassroots initiatives and publish it via email and on our website. The targets of this email newsletter are diverse. They are people like you that have worked for years in various capacities with local groups, they are people who have had no connection to the region before the war started and they became glued to their computers reading reports, they are International NGOs who have a mandate to work with local partners and also UNHCR which in their refugee return plan has focused specifically on how to support civil society during reconstruction. This letter is an appeal for several things: * I need contacts. This can mean emails, phone numbers, addresses or even just names. These can be anyone you know whether they work with NGOs or not. If you could also forward this email to them and let them know I am legitimate that would be great. * If you know about an initiative that could benefit from the publicity let me know. (examples of these initiatives are in the first of the series which is at www.advocacynet.org) * I also need people to forward my reports far and wide to ensure people know about these people's work. To subscribe yourself send a message to <majordomo at wyrdwright.com> with the text <subscribe kosovo> in the body. * I also need names of friends and family that may have gone missing in the last few months. I will be able to ask about them while I am there. In no way should this be seen as a partisan mission. I will try to visit all groups no matter the ethnicity or nationality of the people who run it as long as they are doing good work. Below is the first of the series on civil society in the region that went out a month ago. Hope to hear from you.
