Deal All: A group of young Albanian political scientists has taken the initiative to establish the Albanian Political Science Association (ALPSA). The founding meeting will take place in February on a date to be announced later. This letter is an invitation to all Albanian political scientists, and Albanian graduate students of all branches of political science to take part in the founding meeting of the Association. The founding meeting of the Association will also elect the Board of Directors, which will be responsible to complete the registration of the Association in a court in Albania and run the Association until the first meeting of the general assembly. Given the fact that Albanian students of political science are studying in universities all over the world, participation in the founding meeting can be done through electronic mediums, as well. Below is a short description of the goals of the Association and some of projects we plan to launch. The projects have started independently of the Association, but now it is possible to organize them under the name of ALPSA. The Albanian Political Science Association (ALPSA) is a new non-governmental organization established in Tirana, Albania. The goal of the Association is to contribute to the establishment/advancement of studies in all branches of political science (e.g. comparative politics, political economy and public choice, international relations, political theory, public policy, area studies, etc.) in Albania. The members of the Association are mainly young Albanian graduates from western universities who specialize in these areas. OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSOCIATION ARE: - To encourage and develop political science and its relationship with other disciplines; - To hold conferences and meetings for the discussion of political science problems and the exchange of views in matters relating to political science; - To publish journals, newspapers, books and monographs relating to political science; - To organize summer schools or other activities in pursuance of the objectives of the Association. - To give grants, scholarships or fellowships to deserving individuals, groups of persons or organizations in pursuance of the objectives of the Association; - To facilitate the application of its members for grants for projects relating to political science; The Association as such will not assume a position upon any question of public policy not directly related to the discipline of political science or commit its members to any position thereupon. PROJECTS PLANNED FOR THE YEAR 2000: 1st TIRANA SUMMER SCHOOL IN POLITICAL SCIENCE AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS. TIRANA, ALBANIA, JULY 9- AUGUST 6, 2000. The summer school will offer courses in Political Sociology; Comparative Politics; Governance in European Union and the Challenge of Enlargement; International Relations Theory; Foreign Policy Analysis; and Public Choice. The summer school will be a national event and it will be open to lecturers and teaching assistants at universities in Albania, Kosova or at the University of Tetova, and Albanian graduate students of political science and international relations. The total number of participants will be 40. The Summer school will be fully financed by the Higher Education Support Program, Budapest; Open Society Foundation for Albania; and the Kosovo Foundation for an Open Society. Lectures will be offered by western professors of political science, but seminars and tutorials will be led by young Albanian political scientists. Distinguished political scientists or practitioners from Albania and its neighbouring countries will be invited to offer public lectures. Applications for teaching assistantship in the summer school courses are welcomed. Ideal applicants should be graduate students of political science or International Relations from Albania or Kosova. Participants and TA's will have all their expenses covered or receive remuneration.
