Police Come Down Hard on Smuggled Condoms

TIRANA - Police in southern Albania hauled in a record five million 
contraband condoms from Greece with a street value of $700,000, a daily 
reported on Friday.
The truck driver told police his cargo was exempt from customs duty as 
they were a gift from humanitarian groups to encourage safe sex among the 
impoverished Balkan nation's 3.3 million people, the Gazeta Shqiptare said.
The police did not report the identity of the truck driver or the final 
destination of the load. His truck was stopped at a police check-point 
between the Albania-Greece customs border point at Kakavija and the 
southernmost city of Gjirokastra.
The condoms are being guarded by police while authorities decide on what 
to do with them.
Albania is trying to crack down on smuggling - especially of fuel, 
cigarettes and coffee - since customs duties account for some 60 percent 
of budget revenues.
