Dr. BAREND A.J. COHEN, honored forensic surgeon and international human
rights activist has passed away in Woerden, the Netherlands on June 21,
2005. Dr Cohen had visited Kosova both prior to and following The Crisis
to assist in determining genocidal and ethnic cleansing violations. He
had been instrumental in organizing an effort and thus securing an
apology and correction from an article in the New York Times which had
misrepresented the Kosovar Albanians in the mid-1990s and was honored as
an honorary citizen of Albania. Known with affection among his Albanian
friends as "Bardhi," Dr Cohen was active as a forensic specialist in
numerous projects worldwide, including efforts in Uganda, the Balkans,
the Middle East, Japan and Indonesia, where he was born in 1942. He
received numerous academic and professional honors including the Royal
Order of Oranj Nassau for which he was invested by the Queen of the
Netherlands.

Heralded for his thorough objectivity in the advocacy of human rights
issues and his relentless pursuit of truth and justice for the
victimized, he shall be dearly missed by his family, friends and
colleagues for his compassion and for his sense of humor.

He leaves his wife, Nelleke Cohen-Platteshor, a daughter Marieke and a
son Erik-Jan.

May his memory ever be eternal.

Very Rev Arthur E. Liolin
