Help Stop Helen Delich Bentley's Run for Congress Helen Delich Bentley, a Serb-American nationalist, is trying to regain her congressional seat in Maryland. She must be stopped. Bentley, a first generation American of Serbian descent, previously served in the Congress representing the second district of Maryland. She retired from the Congress to run for governor of Maryland. She was defeated in the primary. Bob Ehrlich replaced her in the Congress. Ehrlich is now running for Governor, and Bentley is trying to reclaim her old seat. During her 10 years in the US Congress, Helen Delich Bentley served as the voice of Serbian nationalism at the expense of Albanians and other people. She also used her positions as President of SerbNet, an umbrella organization of Serbian-American organizations that she helped found, to promote Serbian extremism in the United States primarily by distorting history. Here is Helen Delich Bentley in her own words, as entered in the official Congressional Record in 1990 (101st Congress, 2nd Session 136 Cong Rec E 1751): Praising Milosevic "…it has only been since Slobodan Milosevic came to power in Serbia that all of Yugoslavia recognizes, finally, that Tito is dead, that many of Tito's henchmen have been put out of office, and that the Serbians have been able to hold their heads high." Fudging the Numbers "Where the province [Kosovo] once was 75% Serbian and 25% Albanian, the proportions now not only are reversed, but the Serbian share is said to be down to less than 10%." Promoting Serbian Nationalism at the Expense of Others "There is no doubt in the minds of Serbians that the Twentieth Century battle of Kosovo has resulted from Marshall Tito's high-handed manner, not only in forcing the Serbians out of their homes there, but also in encouraging the Albanians from Albania to flock into Kosovo in droves -- by the thousands. … the Serbs themselves have [not] been able to have any pride about their heritage because they had been so downgraded throughout Yugoslavia by their enemy, Marshall Tito." The question now is what our community will do to help defeat Bentley? Her opponent in the campaign is Dutch Ruppersberger, the county executive. He is a solid guy who pledges to support democracy and self-determination for people in the Balkans. He and Bentley are currently even in the polls. Dutch's campaign certainly needs volunteers and votes. If you live in the Maryland region, please contact the campaign directly at 410-252-2505. For everyone else, please send a contribution for ANY amount you can afford. Make checks payable to: Dutch Ruppersberger for Congress. Send them to Ilir Zherka, 1940 15th Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20009. Working together, we can help defeat Helen Delich Bentley!
