MILS NEWS Skopje, October 21, 2002

"RAINBOW" WILL OPEN THE ISSUE ABOUT DISCRIMINATION OF MACEDONIANS IN
GREECE
After announcement of the minority report in Council of Europe in
which Macedonian minority in Greece is not mentioned, political party
of the Macedonians in Greece "Rainbow" will send letter to the Council
of Europe in which opening of the issue for discrimination of
Macedonians in Greece will be requested. As "Vecher" writes, in the
report of Commissar for Human Rights, Alvaro Jil Roble delivered to
the Committee of Ministers and to Parliamentary Assembly of Council of
Europe, Macedonian minority in Greece is not mentioned at all. During
the meeting in Athens with representatives of the Macedonian party in
Greece the problems were brought up and that is why "Rainbow" is
surprised that Roble did not found place in the report for any of
these issues. This does not mean that "Rainbow" condemns the report,
because in general it is positive. But undertaking of many concrete
measures by the international institutions for exceeding the problems
that refer to protection of human rights is necessary, stated in
"Rainbow". Hereby content of recommendations of Roble is expressed -
Greece to verify Frame Convention for Protection of National
Minorities and to sign the European Chapter for regional and languages
of minorities. According to "Rainbow", Council of Europe still should
go one step forward from general recommendations and to focus on more
concrete advises, above all to non acknowledgement of Macedonians as
minority, their discrimination and relations towards political
refugees.
