United States - China Relations Ambassador Clark Randt, Jr. United States Ambassador to China In a time of changing international views and diplomacy, the relations between the United States and China have both prospered and weakened over the past year. In April 2001, a U.S. spy plane crashed into a Chinese fighter jet resulting in the detainment of 24 U.S. military personnel and a standoff between the two nations. After the release of the personnel and a brief period of confrontation, relations between the two countries strengthened. Taiwan independence is an ongoing discussion as well, as is the current possibility of a war with Iraq. Though China will not directly object to the U.S. position on Iraq, would it support another country opposing the U.S. position? The tension between the nations has increased, but the interdependence between them, in commerce and investment, will ultimately influence all actions. Where is the relationship between the United States and China heading? What will Bush and Jiang discuss in the upcoming summit in Texas? Join us for a discussion on these vital topics.
