The Security Policy Group is planning a volume entitled "Security in
southern and eastern Europe", to be published during 2003. The call for
paper proposals is now open for prospective contributors. The paper
proposals should be around 200 words, along with a brief biographical
statement of the authors. Preliminary decisions on the papers, on the
basis of the abstracts, will be made by 1 June 2002. The deadline for
proposals is 5 February 2002.

Some of the suggested topics include:

1. The emerging non-military security considerations in the region:
organised crime, terrorism, corruption.
2. Government capacity in the transitional countries of southeastern
Europe to establish transparent and efficient security services.
3. The future of the state security forces, their legitimate and factual
roles, and the relationship between them and the particular governments.
4. Military and ethnic animosities in the region.
5. The Albanian question.
6. Kosovo and Macedonia.
7. Greece as a regional power and its integrative influence.
8. Turkey.
9. Stability pact and its capacity to influence security issues in the
region.
10. EU accession as an element of regiional security.
11. Security-related identities in the region.
12. Civilian control of the armed forces in the region.

Papers on these and other related topics will be accepted.
