LETTER: KEEP THE MARBLES

John Bramley

Sir: When he was visiting the Acropolis in Athens Mark Steele (Comment, 17 January) should have looked carefully at the condition of the Parthenon and the Caryatid from the Porch of the Maidens. All is corroded by air pollution. That would have the fate of the Elgin Marbles if they had remained in situ. Whatever Lord Elgin's motives were, the statues are in a good state of preservation and seen by thousands easily and for free.

At that time Greece did not exist as a state, and the revolution against the Turks was inspired by the Orthodox Church, not the glorious democratic past. Stories of weeping workmen, if they were not invented by Melina Mercouri, probably do not have the import that modern sentimentalists claim for them.

JOHN BRAMLEY
