ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW MASTER'S DEGREE IN INTERCULTURAL HUMAN RIGHTS A One-Year Program for Mid-Career Professionals We are pleased to announce and would like to draw the attention of qualified applicants to our great program: "LL.M. / M.A. in Intercultural Human Rights." This program is now accepting applications for the 2002-2003 academic year. This innovative program is designed to offer in-depth instruction on the critical issue of our time: the protection of human dignity across political, religious, social, economic and cultural lines. It provides the most up-to-date legal insights on theory, policy, and practical developments in the arena of human rights. Our mostly one-week compact courses that make up the program in intercultural human rights are designed to offer the highest quality of legal education in the combined areas of international law, international human rights law, humanitarian law, universal and regional systems of human rights protection, as well as complaint procedures. Specific issues of civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights, refugees' law and rights, women's rights, children's rights, indigenous peoples' rights, human rights and religion, international criminal law and international trade are some of the courses addressed in detail. Human Rights and Terrorism and Humanitarian Law will be new courses added in the 2002-2003 academic year. Through these intensive courses and supplementary offerings, students will be prepared for effective research and advocacy in the field. In interactive dialogue, networking with distinguished faculty, they will gain the best available inside knowledge of human rights in action. The faculty of global distinction includes top-level United Nations experts, outstanding scholars, judges and practitioners in the field. As examples we would only refer to Professor Michael Reisman of the Yale Law School, former President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights; Professor Erica Daes, longtime Chair of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations; Professors Eckart Klein and Martin Scheinin of the UN Human Rights Committee; Dr. Pierre-Michel Fontaine, Chief, Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo; Professor Kalliopi Koufa, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Terrorism; and Professor Iulia Motoc, Immediate Past President of the UN Subcommission on Human Rights. The LL.M. or M.A. degree is earned in one year, upon completion of 24 academic credits. The program's setting in Miami also offers a stunning natural and an exciting intercultural environment. Education Requirements: Enrollment for the LL.M. degree is open to holders of a J.D. degree or similar foreign qualifications. The M.A. degree is offered to holders of a bachelor's degree or its foreign equivalent. Successful applicants will demonstrate a strong commitment to human rights, creativity and the intellectual capacity to succeed in a demanding academic setting. Cost: Tuition and fees equal $18,500.
