Boss Prize Short List

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum has announced the finalists for its Hugo Boss Prize. The $50,000 award, named for the German men's wear company that sponsors it, is given every two years to an artist whose work represents a significant development in contemporary art. This year's finalists, ranging in age from 27 to 42, all concentrate on film, video and installation art. As in 2000, there are no painters.

"It reflects the tenor of what's happening today," said Nancy Spector, curator of contemporary art at the Guggenheim, who was part of the six-member jury. "We discussed the fact that there were no painters but felt it was not alarming."

The finalists are:

Francis Alys, an artist born in Antwerp and living in Mexico City who deals with the absurdity of urban life through his collaborations with local artists and craftsmen in a variety of media, from video to performance art.

Olafur Eliasson, a Copenhagen-born artist working in Berlin, whose sculptures, installations and photographs have been the subject of solo exhibitions in both the United States and abroad.

Hachiya Kazuhiko, a Toyko-based media artist who has already won several awards, including the Philip Morris Art Award in 1998.

Pierre Huyghe, a video artist who represented France at last year's Venice Biennale with an award-winning project about music, sound and light.

Koo Jeong-a, a Seoul-born installation artist living and working in Paris, whose pieces incorporate everyday materials like aspirin tablets, pencils and coins.

Anri Sala, born in Albania and based in Paris, who won a young artists' prize at the 2001 Venice Biennale for his poetic video installation on transience and tourism.

A publication showing the finalists' work will be available at the Guggenheim's shops in May. The winner will be chosen this fall and given an exhibition at the Guggenheim in early 2003.
