Mitsotakis Sees FYROM Compromise Conservative former PM Constantine Mitsotakis, whose government refused to recognize the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia at the height of a dispute over what Greece's northern neighbor should be called, yesterday proposed a compromise solution. "If we now head for a compromise - which I consider most likely and not a bad thing - the council of political leaders must necessarily be convoked first under the president," Mitsotakis said. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday night, opposition New Democracy's honorary chairman had noted that a 1992 decision by the same council not to recognize FYROM under any name containing the word Macedonia had "harmed Greece." Yesterday, press reports in Skopje quoted FYROM Premier Ljubco Georgievski as proposing the "compromise" of the name Macedonia being used in communication with the world in general, while Greece could call the country by any name of its choice.
