Text: OSCE Appeals for Constructive Cooperation in Albania Elections
(Geoana warns against political polarization in Albania) (430)

Mircea Geoana, chairman-in-office of the Organization for Security and
Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), is urging political forces in Albania to
contribute to the success of the June parliamentary elections, which he
says could "mark yet another milestone in Albania's democratic
development."
"The process of democratic elections must not be held hostage to
political polarization," said Geoana, who is also Romania's foreign
minister. Disputes among political parties are hampering preparations
for the elections, according to an OSCE press release.

OSCE APPEALS FOR CONSTRUCTIVE CO-OPERATION IN ALBANIA ELECTIONS

TIRANA, 12 February 2001 -- The Chairman-in-Office of the Organization
for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Romanian Foreign Minister
Mircea Geoana, today issued an urgent appeal to all political forces in
Albania to contribute to the success of the upcoming parliamentary
elections.
"The June parliamentary elections could mark yet another milestone
in Albania's democratic development. It is of the utmost importance that
this opportunity will not be missed," said the Chairman-in-Office. "I
appeal to all political forces in the country to contribute to the
success of these elections in a constructive spirit. The process of
democratic elections must not be held hostage to political
polarization."
On a visit to Albania today, the OSCE Chairman-in-Office met with,
among others, the President of Albania, Rexhep Meidani, the Prime
Minister Ilir Meta, the Foreign Minister Paskal Milo, as well as leaders
of political parties. The main issue in his discussions was the
preparations for the parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for
the month of June this year. The preparations are being hampered by
disagreements between the political parties on a number of issues.
"I am confident that Albania will be able to continue on its path
towards democracy and prosperity," stated Minister Geoana. He added that
Albania already is playing an important role in achieving stability in
South Eastern Europe by strengthening its ties to other countries in the
region and participating in many regional initiatives.
"The OSCE has witnessed much of this process from the inside, since
the establishment of its Presence in Albania in 1997. The OSCE stands
ready to assist Albania in the future as well, in close co-operation
with the Albanian Government and institutions."
