Albania "Not So Happy" With Zagreb Summit

TIRANA, Nov 26, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) Albania is "not so happy" with the results of Friday's Zagreb summit between European Union and Balkans leaders, Albanian Foreign Minister Paskal Milo said in Budapest Saturday.

"Albania thinks that the European Union must take much more decisions in the pro-integration process in southeastern Europe," Milo said, speaking in English.

"We expected to have much more support in the integration of Albania," he said.

Albania, as well as four states of the former Yugoslavia -- Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) and Macedonia -- are viewed as potential candidates of membership in the European Union.

"Albania is not so happy with Zagreb," Milo told a press conference after a summit of the prime ministers of the 16 states of the Central European Initiative (CEI) which gathered Saturday to welcome Yugoslavia back into its ranks.

In a joint declaration, the states of the regional cooperation organization nevertheless "welcomed the Final Declaration adopted by the Zagreb summit," and stressed the importance of the Croatian meeting between EU states and potential membership candidates "which enhances the stability and economic prosperity throughout the region".

Only two of the CEI states -- Austria and Italy -- are EU members. ((c) 2000 Agence France Presse)
