CALL FOR PAPERS
BORDERS:
Issues and prospects for successor states of former
Yugoslavia
A multidisciplinary, graduate student conference on
current issues in Southeast Europe
March 30-31, 2001, at the Centre for Russian and East
European Studies of the University of Toronto
As the 21 st century begins, the citizens of the
successor states of former Yugoslavia are at an
important crossroads:
behind them, the material, social and political
devastation of civil war, ahead, many challenges.
Reconstruction
cannot be achieved without coming to terms with the
past, deciding on the content of national identity,
and
reflecting on the nature of international interactions
in Southeastern Europe.
To address some of these issues, the Centre for
Russian and East European Studies at the University of
Toronto will
host a multidisciplinary conference entitled
“Borders”. Panelists will be encouraged to reflect on
the paradigm of
borders – geopolitical, cultural, historical,
linguistic, social and religious – in the presentation
of their work on the
successor states of former Yugoslavia. The conference
will take place over one-and-a-half days and will
consist of
four panels of an hour and a half each. A brief
videoconference with colleagues from Croatia,
Bosnia-Herzegovina
and Yugoslavia is planned for the closing of the
conference.
The conference will be organized around the following
themes:
LEGACY
- What is the legacy of various periods of Yugoslav
History – for example, the Ottoman and
Austro-Hungarian
occupations, the first Yugoslavia, the second World
War, the recent wars of secession?
- What models from the past can be useful in the
creation of new Southeast European identities and
institutions?
IDENTITY
- In what ways are the new states defining national
identity?
- What is the future of a Southeast European identity?
- What is the status of ethnic minority-majority
relations in current-day Southeastern Europe,
particularly with
reference to population displacements caused by recent
wars?
BEYOND ETHNICITY
- What is the status of women in the new states?
- How are the concerns of urban and rural populations
managed?
- Which social groups are marginalized in the region,
and why? How can they be reintegrated?
INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
- What challenges does the international community
face in current-day Southeastern Europe?
- What role should different international
institutions play, and what policies should they
pursue?
* Other panel topics may be considered
