Over 28 thousand tons of beers imported to Albania in past ten months of 
2000



A great amount of locally produced and imported beer from the neighbouring 
countries is consumed in Albania. During the past ten months of 2000, some 
28 512 tons of imported beer was cleared through the Albanian customs. 
According to the data of the General Customs' Department the amount of the 
imported beer during June-September is about 29 percent higher than the same 
period last year. During October, about 3 thousand tons of imported beer has 
entered Albania mostly through the customs points of Kakavija and Vlora. 
Along with the imported beers, a considerable place takes the locally 
produced beer in Albania.

According to specialists, with the completion of the process of 
privatization of the factory Birra Malto in Tirana, which was bought by the 
Italian Company "Peroni" with 6.5 million dollars, it is expected that the 
locally produced beer will take a greater share of the Albanian market. 
According to official statistics, Greece, Holland and Italy occupy the main 
place in the imported beer in Albania. About 64 percent of the total import 
of beer comes from Greece, 16 percent from Holland and 15 percent from 
Italy.
