Yugoslavia Admitted As a U.N. Member

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The General Assembly admitted Yugoslavia by
acclamation on Wednesday as a new U.N. member, eight years after Belgrade
was cast into the diplomatic wilderness following the breakup of the old
Yugoslav federation. The old Yugoslavia was a founder member of the United
Nations in 1945. But Belgrade has been in limbo since 1992, after Bosnia,
Croatia, Macedonia and Slovenia seceded, leaving the new Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia under President Slobodan Milosevic comprising only Serbia and
Montenegro. The General Assembly ruled at the time that the rump Yugoslav
state "cannot continue automatically the membership of the former Socialist
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" and had to apply to join, just like the four
states that seceded. The way for this was cleared when President Vojislav
Kostunica last month replaced Milosevic, widely blamed for the bloody
conflicts that accompanied the break-up of the old Yugoslavia. Last Friday
Kostunica applied for U.N. membership for his country and on Tuesday the
Security Council unanimously recommended that the 189-member General
Assembly admit Yugoslavia as a member.
