British Soldier Reunited with Kosovo Dog he Saved

LONDON, May 4, 2000 -- (Reuters) A British soldier was
re-united on
Wednesday with the dog he rescued as a starving puppy
in war-torn 
Kosovo.

Lance Corporal Steve Smith had an emotional reunion
with Osker after 
the
golden retriever mongrel served out six months in
quarantine.

Osker was adopted by the Royal Signals regiment after
Smith found him
starving to death on the outskirts of Pristina.

He was brought back to England with the help of the
World Society for 
the
Protection of Animals. British Airways gave the dog a
free flight.

Smith recalled how they first met: "I spotted this
little black thing 
in the
road and stopped just before I ran it over."

"He was very, very small and quite ugly as a
two-week-old puppy away 
from
its mother. He had not been fed. We gave him about a
week to see if he 
would
live and he got through," he said.
