UFT-Albanian American Teachers Committee
Press Release
13 December 1998

The Albanian American Teachers Committee of the United Federation of
Teachers was created in the fall of 1997 by a group of Albanian American
educators who teach in the New York City Public Schools. The United
Federation of Teachers (which one of the largest unions in the country)
has a number of professional committees. Among them there are eight ethnic
committees:
1. African American
2. Albanian American
3. Asian American
4. Hellenic American
5. Hispanic Heritage
6. Irish American
7. Italian American
8. Jewish Heritage

The Albanian Teachers Committees is the newest one. The objectives of the
Albanian American Teachers Committee of the United Federation of Teachers
are:
1. To promote cultural awareness among ethnic groups
2. To assist Albanian-Americans to integrate in the U.S.
3. To assist Albanian parents to better understand the educational system
in New York City
4. To work with other communities and associations of the United
Federation of Teachers (UFT) to promote cultural awareness and to engender
friendly relations among other ethnic groups
5. To be helpful to the UFT chapter leaders, parents and the
administration
6. To provide a list of names of members who can translate
7. To promote the teachers' education profession in the Albanian Community
8. To celebrate the heritage and the culture of Albania in November around
the national holiday of Albania (which is the independence day)

The Albanian Educators mailing list which has just been set up will
primarily be of service to meeting the objectives listed above, however,
it will not restrict discussion that deal with education development of
the Albanian people elsewhere.
