**** Albanian Educators Discussion List **** UFT-Albanian American Teachers Committee Press Release 13 December 1998 The Albanian American Teachers Committee of the United Federation of Teachers was created in the fall of 1997 by a group of Albanian American educators who teach in the New York City Public Schools. The United Federation of Teachers (which one of the largest unions in the country) has a number of professional committees. Among them there are eight ethnic committees: 1. African American 2. Albanian American 3. Asian American 4. Hellenic American 5. Hispanic Heritage 6. Irish American 7. Italian American 8. Jewish Heritage The Albanian Teachers Committees is the newest one. The objectives of the Albanian American Teachers Committee of the United Federation of Teachers are: 1. To promote cultural awareness among ethnic groups 2. To assist Albanian-Americans to integrate in the U.S. 3. To assist Albanian parents to better understand the educational system in New York City 4. To work with other communities and associations of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) to promote cultural awareness and to engender friendly relations among other ethnic groups 5. To be helpful to the UFT chapter leaders, parents and the administration 6. To provide a list of names of members who can translate 7. To promote the teachers' education profession in the Albanian Community 8.
